Keep Open Tabs From Re-Opening When Quitting and Restarting Safari in Mac OS Lion

Apple’s new “Resume” feature in Mac OS Lion allows you to open and close documents without having to worry about saving or losing data. And when you re-open the application, it brings you back to the exact point in a document where you last left it.

However, when browsing the web, this can be quite annoying. If you close Safari with 10 tabs left open, then they will all immediately re-open when you start up Safari again.

To get around this, quit Safari in Mac OS Lion by pressing press cmd + option + Q instead of cmd + Q. This will quit the application and close all tabs.

When you re-open Safari, you are only left with whatever your default setting is for opening a new window. I have mine set to “Open a blank page” so that is what I get when I open Safari.

Much better!! Enjoy!

Apple, Give Me Thread View NOW!

iPhone has it.

The new Mail in Mac OS Lion has it.

Mobile Me mail does NOT have it.

I want thread view on Mobile Me!!

(I am assuming they are adding it when Mobile Me becomes iCloud but it has been annoying today and I wish I had it now…)

It looks like Apple still has their work cut out for them with Lion. I am finding that there are still a ton of app windows at the OS level that do not change the pointer to a resize cursor when you hover over the edge of the window. (this is the Character Viewer window. The funny thing is that you can still resize the window, it just won’t give you any visual feedback.)
Fix it Apple!

🌟 Quick Tip: How to “Completely Quit” An App in Mac OS Lion

Apple has a brand new feature called Resume which is part of Mac OS Lion.

This new feature can be both good and bad. It’s good if Safari (or any other app) crashes while you are using it because when you re-open the app, none of your data will be lost, and Lion puts you back exactly where you were before you crashed.

However, it can be bad when you have like 18 tabs open in Safari, you quit the app, and then a couple hours later you decide to open Safari again only to have those 18 tabs restore themselves upon launch.

But there is a solution! There is a new keyboard shortcut for quitting apps that will remove the Resume “cache” (or whatever you want to call it) so that the next time you open the app it won’t restore your last session.

Simply press  + ⌥ + Q  (cmd + option + Q) and it will quit the app, and clear all the Resume information stored for that session.

Change Mac OS X 10.7 Lion iCal and Address Book Skins - Easy Method

I am not a fan of the new leather title bar in iCal on Lion… what were they thinking? Now all we need is a wood-effect dashboard for our cars and rotary-dial iPhones…
I created new images files to go inside iCal.app and AddressBook.app to give them an aluminium look like previous versions of OS X.

I Made The Leap

So I installed Lion and decided to celebrate the occasion by buying a brand spanking new Magic Trackpad to take advantage of all the new gestures!

I must say, Lion is pretty amazing and I LOVE using the Magic Trackpad more than I ever thought I would. It won’t replace my mouse for EVERYTHING, but it has become my new method of interaction with my computer for casual computer use. (i.e Browsing the web, listening to music, editing pics, etc.)

One problem I have is that my mid-2007 Mac Mini is choking on Lion pretty hard. Lots of beach balls and lots of problems handling the new animations.

I realized that my Mini is actually incapable of displaying the animation for Launchpad. It has NEVER been able to display the animation of the icons coming onto the screen smoothly.

So, now I am in the market for a new computer, but I dunno if I should save money with a somewhat underpowered Mac Mini again or if I should splurge and drop like 3 grand on a decked out iMac. (mind you I am a graphic designer and programmer so my head is stuck in Adobe products pretty much all day long.)

I just don’t think I can ever justify dropping 3 grand again on a Mac computer after I got burned so bad by Apple in the past. I had received a Macbook Pro from my mother as a graduation gift and the logic board failed outside the warranty and in less than a year it became a 3 grand paperweight.

I was so pissed because my parents aren’t rich or anything and they tried to do something nice and it ended up turning into a complete waste of money. The cost of buying a new logic board was about the same price as a brand new Mac Mini. So I opted for the Mini, because there is no way any laptop on this planet is worth $3800. Especially when it will be completely worthless in about 3 to 5 years. I still have the computer. Someday when I can find a cheap logic board for it, I might make it a fun project to work on in my free time and fix it up.

“Natural” Scrolling

Top 10 reasons why you are bitching about the scroll direction in Lion:

  1. You’re retarded.
  2. You’re bored and an attention whore.
  3. You’re single and haven’t been laid in over a year.
  4. You needed something to blog about while waiting for Lion to download.
  5. You’re a PC user that just switched to a Mac.
  6. You just hate scrolling, period.
  7. You’re old and you hate change.
  8. You don’t own a Magic Trackpad.
  9. You work for Adobe and realized nothing you created works on Lion anymore.
  10. And the number one reason you would be bitching about the scroll direction in Lion is because you’re Eric Schmidt and you wish you thought of if first.

Who Is Brave Enough?

To purchase and install Mac OSX Lion tomorrow? :D

I think I am going to do it. I just have to run Time Machine first…

(That is, of course, if the Adobe CS3 design suite has no conflicts with it.)

Lion allows resizing of windows from any side or corner.
Holding shift while doing this increases the width and height by the same amount. Holding option causes it to scale from the center of the window instead of the opposite corner or side.
